Leading owners for Australian trade marks - interactive visualisation
A new study of Australian trade mark applications has shown that:
The top three recent applicants are Aristocrat, Samsung and Apple (Australian trade marks applications filed from 2016 to 2021),
The top three owners of active trade marks are Nestle, Johnson & Johnson and Loreal - with Aristocrat the leading Australian owner.
The full list of the top 10 recent trade mark applicants from Australia, and the top 10 from outside Australia, is shown below - via an interactive graphic that shows for each applicant:

Most of the names should be family to many readers, but with a couple of surprises:
Lidl is a German supermarket company that had plans of setting up in Australia, but in 2020 ended these plans.
Endeavour Group is a hotel, poker machine and liquor company (including Dan Murphy’s) spun off from Woolworths in 2021.
The above list was based on trade mark applications from 2016 to 2021. The list below instead shows the leading owners of active trade marks (published, protected or accepted) with no age limit. Since trade marks can be renewed indefinitely (in the absence of a successful non-use action by another party), some of the marks owned by these owners are quite old, with some of the marks having official filing dates of 2006.
Again this graph is a composite of the top 10 Australian owners, and the top 10 non-Australian owners. Nestle was the leading foreign company, while Aristocrat was the leading local owner.
Again a mouseover of each bar will bring up further information about these portfolios, including in this case the earliest active mark filed by each of these applicants.
